Hints on How to Make the Game Fun!

Ten hints on how to make this year's Secret Santa game fun:
  1. "The more the merrier." Keep your participants on their toes by having more than enough people for them to guess who their gifter may be.
  2. Encourage gifting of stocking stuffers and of items that can be used to describe the gifter in a way most others are not familiar. Not only will the giftee get to appreciate a nice gift, but it will be memorable.
  3. Build up the excitement. Prior to the "reveal" party, as a coordinator, you can send out an email to the list, thanking gifters and commending them on their small surprises.
  4. Recommend a theme for a certain day. Themes can be as simple as gifts of a certain color, or a certain type, such as books or candy.
  5. Start small, end big. You can set certain monetary value for each incremental gift over the weeks or days leading up to the reveal.
  6. Encourage the occasional red herring. An unexpected type of gift can certainly throw a player off of the gifter's scent.
  7. It's all in the presentation. A blah item may not be so blah if it's wrapped nicely in a way that it shows care and thought.
  8. Mix it up. Although a gifter -> giftee pair means that the giftee will certainly receive a gift from the gifter, the gifter has the freedom to give fun gifts to all participants if s/he so chooses.
  9. Homemade is from the heart. Rather than setting monetary limits, you can instead encourage hand-built crafts or decorations.
  10. "It's the thought that counts." If you're lucky enough to be paired to a person who you've known for a long time, use the gifts you give as a way to communicate how much you appreciate and truly understand that person.
